Science – Technology – Engineering – Math
The demand and need for school initiatives based around science, technology, engineering and math programs is driven by a view that economic prosperity in adult life lies in a workforce that is well-versed in those fields. There has been an increased investment in S.T.E.M. initiatives in schools, which we are excited to say now extends to Everest Academy.
The Everest S.T.E.M. program is initially being offered integrated into our students daily schedules through our Skill blocks, which means it fits into the part of the day otherwise allocated to athletic, music and team programs. It is instrumental to any science curriculum and is designed to foster deeper student interest in subjects they may want to experience with a greater degree of hands-on activity and without the pressure of marks and assessment success.
As a new program, it will be limited to our Grade 1 through 8 classes during the first skill term (there are three skill terms per school year) and expanded to include all of our Secondary students as it matures. Each S.T.E.M. session may have a cost related to “materials” used that will depend on the project the students can try. Costs will be communicated to families, and are estimated between $25.00 to $40.00 per session. Some sessions will incur no costs to students.
For those who also hear the term S.T.E.A.M. used, this is an extension of S.T.E.M. that includes an “Art” component. For our Elementary and Intermediate ages at Everest the program is not expected to include specific Art components as Art and Music are integrated into their curriculum.
